J.League Matchweek 34 Recap: Shock results at top and bottom of table

It was a surprising weekend in the Meiji Yasuda J1 League, where the top five teams all failed to win, while two sides in the relegation zone picked up victories to aid their bid for safety.

Let’s check in on all the action:

Shonan Bellmare 2, Sanfrecce Hiroshima 1

Satoshi Tanaka’s stoppage time rocket stunned league leaders Sanfrecce and earned Bellmare their third straight win, moving them six points clear of the drop zone.

Vissel Kobe 0, FC Tokyo 2

Keita Endo scored off a beautiful chested pass from Ryotaro Araki and Soma Anzai headed home a second as FC Tokyo dashed Vissel’s chance to go top of the table.

Kashiwa Reysol 1, FC Machida Zelvia 1

A stoppage time penalty rescued a point for Zelvia as Hokuto Shimoda buried his shot from the spot to move Zelvia within five points of the top.

Kashima Antlers 0, Avispa Fukuoka 0

Both Antlers and Fukuoka defended excellently to split the points in Kashima.

Kawasaki Frontale 1, Gamba Osaka 1

Welton gave Gamba an early lead, but Yu Kobayashi equalized late for Frontale as the two sides drew in Kawasaki.

Tokyo Verdy 2, Urawa Reds 1

Ryoma Watanabe put Urawa in front, but Yuto Tsunashima played the role of unlikely hero as the defender blasted one from distance then headed home to single-handedly take Verdy from a goal down to three points.

Cerezo Osaka 1, Júbilo Iwata 2

It was a duel between two of the league’s best scorers as Léo Ceará scored for Cerezo and Ryo Germain netted twice for Júbilo in a terrific clash that went the way of the visitors.

Nagoya Grampus 0, Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo 2

Goals by Yoshiaki Komai and Musashi Suzuki lifted Consadole to a vital win as they moved seven points from escaping the relegation zone.

Yokohama F·Marinos 0, Albirex Niigata 0

The Tricolor had more of the ball, but Albi had the edge in chances as the two sides jousted for 90 minutes before settling for a point apiece.

Kyoto Sanga 2, Sagan Tosu 0

Sanga went down to 10 men after just 10 minutes, but that didn’t stop Marco Túlio and Shinnosuke Fukuda from finding the back of the net to pick up a victory in unlikely fashion.
