Teenage goalkeeper Zion Suzuki has made headlines all year with his confident and composed play between the posts for Urawa Reds and now has the 2021 J.LEAGUE YBC Levain CUP New Hero Award to show for it.
The 19-year-old netminder was awarded the honor for his stellar performances in the cup competition, playing nine matches for Urawa en route to a semi-final ouster by Cerezo Osaka over two legs.
Suzuki conceded only 11 times over the course of a very lengthy tournament journey and kept a pair of clean sheets against Shonan Bellmare.
His performances in the MEIJI YASUDA J1 LEAGUE between Matchweeks 13 and 18 were also widely lauded, keeping four clean sheets in six matches, including shutouts against high-flying Vissel Kobe and Nagoya Grampus.
