Nagoya Grampus and Urawa Reds are two of the J.League’s most storied clubs but both have struggled as of late and fallen into the middle of the table.
A midweek clash on Wednesday at 19:00 JST, shown live on JLeague.co and broadcasters around the world, offers up a chance for both clubs to leap up the standings and change their fortunes this season.
Nagoya have not won in their last four, while Urawa are winless in their last five, but they still sit ninth and 11th in the table, respectively.
That means a win on Wednesday could do either team wonders, with three points representing an absolutely transformative result as both look to stop the slide.
Grampus will lean upon their defense, as has been the case for years. Mitchell Langerak is still one of J1’s best goalkeepers and Nagoya rank sixth in the league in fewest goals conceded. If their rearguard can hold up against Urawa, it may only take one moment of magic to walk home winners.
The Reds, by contrast, possess one of the most fearsome attacks in the league when they're at their best. Star striker Thiago Santana will be the danger man, with seven of Urawa's 30 goals to his name, but he hasn't scored in his last six appearances.
Can Santana get back on the mark and lead Urawa back to victory? Or will Nagoya's defense help them bounce back?
