J1 League Matchweek 2 Recap: Shimizu, Shonan, and Hiroshima Maintain Perfect Start! Yokohama FC Triumph in Promoted Sides’ Clash

The 2025 MEIJI YASUDA J1 LEAGUE continued on February 22 with nine matches, with Shimizu S-Pulse making it two straight wins since their first return to the top flight in three years.

At home against Albirex Niigata, Shimizu gained an advantage in the 26’ after their opponents were reduced to ten men. They capitalized just before half-time, with Capixaba scoring his first goal since joining the club at 45+3’. The hosts doubled their lead in the 62’, as substitute Kai Matsuzaki found the net to secure a commanding 2-0 victory.

Shonan Bellmare traveled to face Cerezo Osaka and took the lead with Akito Suzuki’s goal in the 32’. Suzuki struck again in the 51’, putting his side up two goals. Although C-Osaka pulled one back, Shonan held firm to claim a 2-1 victory and extend their perfect start.

In a battle between newly promoted sides, Yokohama FC edged Fagiano Okayama 1-0, with Solomon Sakuragawa netting the winner in the 57’ to secure their first J1 victory since promotion.

Kashima Antlers ran away 4-0 winners vs Tokyo Verdy, as new signing Leo Ceara and Yuma Suzuki both scored braces in a dominant display.

At Kashiwa Reysol, the hosts fell behind to Kawasaki Frontale in the 50’, but new signing Yoshio Koizumi struck in the 57’ to earn a 1-1 draw. Kyoto Sanga F.C. took the lead in the 60th minute with a goal from Rafael Elias, but were caught up in the 73rd minute to draw 1-1 with Urawa Reds.

The Nagoya Grampus vs. Vissel Kobe encounter saw Shuhei Tokumoto fire Nagoya ahead in the 56’, only for Yuya Osako to equalize in the 70’ and then complete the comeback in the 75’. However, Nagoya refused to back down, with Sho Inagaki converting an 85’ penalty to rescue a 2-2 draw.

Gamba Osaka secured a 2-1 win over Avispa Fukuoka, with Shu Kurata scoring twice, despite conceding late. FC Machida Zelvia left it late against FC TOKYO, with Takuma Nishimura netting the decisive goal in the 82’ to snatch a 1-0 victory.

A resolute Hiroshima side held firm to secure a 1-0 victory and maintain their perfect start to the season

The final match of Matchweek 2 took place on 23 February, as Sanfrecce Hiroshima hosted Yokohama F・Marinos.

The match saw an evenly contested first half, with neither side able to find a breakthrough. However, in the 49’, Hiroshima was awarded a penalty following a handball, and Ryo Germain stepped up to convert from the spot. The home side then defended resolutely to preserve their lead and clinch a 1-0 win, making it two victories to start the season.
