Stage set for J.League YBC Levain Cup semi-finals as final four battle

The J.League YBC Levain Cup is down to four teams and the semi-finals are on tap, which will determine which two advance to play at the Japan National Stadium for one of Japanese football’s most coveted trophies.

In one semi-final, Yokohama F·Marinos meet Urawa Reds in a clash of two of the country’s bigger clubs.

The Tricolor staged a second leg comeback to advance from their quarter-final, displaying all the attacking threat that has placed them right in the center of the Meiji Yasuda J1 League title race and now has them chasing down the cup.

Urawa needed no such dramatics in the previous round, cruising to a 4-0 aggregate win. Their always-excellent defense has lived up to their reputations in this tournament, conceding four goals over eight matches.

Despite both Marinos and Urawa being among the country’s biggest and most successful clubs, neither has had a great deal of J.League Cup success. The Tricolor have won the cup just once, while the Reds have claimed it twice. That pales in comparison to their trophy haul in other competitions, but one will be playing for the crown this year. It’s a question of which one.

In the other semi-final, Nagoya Grampus are set to square off against Avispa Fukuoka. Nagoya claimed the cup just two years ago, while Avi are in the midst of their best showing yet. They had only made the knockout stages of the J.League Cup once before this year and now they find themselves one round for the final.

Both teams have been excellent in the tournament, claiming their respective groups with relative ease and then making their way through the quarter-finals. Strong attacks have fueled their cup runs, putting the spotlight on the defenses to hold up against opposition sure to put them under pressure.

The two-legged ties begin on Wednesday and will wrap up with return legs on Sunday. By then the final will be set and two teams will be 90 minutes away from cup glory, but it will take 180 minutes of highly pressurized, intense play to get there. Who will have what it takes to book their trip to the National Stadium?
