J2 LEAGUE

The Year in Review: 2020 MEIJI YASUDA J2 LEAGUE and 2020 MEIJI YASUDA J3 LEAGUE Season Recap!

Last season saw thrilling MEIJI YASUDA J2 LEAGUE and MEIJI YASUDA J3 LEAGUE seasons unfold that kept us on the edge of our seats and demonstrated the quality found further down the Japanese football pyramid.

In the MEIJI YASUDA J2 LEAGUE, Tokushima Vortis were crowned champions of the second tier on the final day at fellow promoted side Avispa Fukuoka. It was a redemptive triumph for Vortis, who were a single result away from going up in 2019 but stumbled at the final hurdle against Shonan Bellmare in the promotion playoff. Tokushima manager Ricardo Rodríguez left straight after the season to take the reins at Urawa Reds, where he’ll see plenty of his former side in the 2021 MEIJI YASUDA J1 LEAGUE, but will go down in Vortis history, widely-praised for the role he played in steering them back to the top flight.

The J2 goalscoring charts were dominated by a familiar face: 36-year-old Kyoto Sanga F.C. striker Peter Utaka, who has had tremendous success in the division in recent years, and whose 22 goals made him a feared assignment for defenders throughout the league. Just behind him was Giravanz Kitakyushu star Akira Silvano Disaro, who scored 18 goals and whose dynamic play left crowds spellbound.

Perhaps the standout player in the MEIJI YASUDA J2 LEAGUE for many, though, was Yuki Kakita, who joined champions Tokushima Vortis from Kashima Antlers and contributed 17 goals to the title-winning cause. He will remain with the team for their return to the top flight—something sure to please the Tokushima Vortis faithful.

In the MEIJI YASUDA J3 LEAGUE, Blaublitz Akita were a revelation, marching to the title undefeated with six games to spare, following a 2-0 win at Gamba Osaka U-23 in mid-November. Having already achieved promotion, the champions let off the gas slightly, only tasting victory once in their remaining matches, but nevertheless will go down as having had a totally dominant campaign—particularly on the defensive end, conceding only 18 times in 34 matches.

Going up to the 2021 MEIJI YASUDA J2 LEAGUE with Blaublitz Akita next season is SC Sagamihara, who finished second after a tense battle with fellow promotion hopefuls AC Nagano Parceiro and Kagoshima United FC, who finished only two and three points back, respectively.

The MEIJI YASUDA J3 LEAGUE’s Golden Boot for 2020 went to Kaito Taniguchi, who scored 18 times for Roasso Kumamoto. While his team would finish well outside the promotion battle when it was all said and done, he will play in the MEIJI YASUDA J2 LEAGUE in 2021 with Albirex Niigata.

In all, it was a tremendously exciting season in the second and third tiers of Japanese football, full of drama and exceptional performances that won’t soon be forgotten. We look forward to you joining us for the next campaign, starting in the MEIJI YASUDA J2 LEAGUE on Saturday, February 27th and in the MEIJI YASUDA J3 LEAGUE on Sunday, March 14th.

Avispa Fukuoka vs Tokushima Vortis – Free Live Streaming on the J.League International YouTube Channel on December 20

The J.League International YouTube Channel will broadcast free J2 matches this weekend. On December 20, we will offer the match between Avispa Fukuoka and Tokushima Vortis from Match-day 42.

Tokushima and Fukuoka have already sealed their promotion to J1. This weekend’s last clash between the top two teams will decide who will finish on top of J2 and lift the trophy.

However, League leaders Tokushima are three points ahead of second-place Fukuoka, and also have a massive lead on goal difference. Fukuoka need a win with seven or more goal difference to become the J2 champions. But despite Tokushima huge advantage, Fukuoka still have a slim chance. To pull out a miracle at home, Fukuoka will do their 110% to score as many goals as possible.

The match kicks off at 14:00 JST on December 20 (Sunday).

Tokyo Verdy vs V Varen Nagasaki – Free Live Streaming on the J.League International YouTube Channel on December 13.

The J.League International YouTube Channel will broadcast a free J2 match this weekend. On December 13, we will offer the match between Tokyo Verdy and V Varen Nagasaki Match-day 40.

Third-place Nagasaki are chasing second-place Avispa Fukuoka by two points as they travel to Tokyo Verdy this weekend. In the previous match, they topped Montedio Yamagata and are now fully back in the fight for promotion. There are high hopes and expectations for Cayman Togashi, who has been in good shape. Tokyo Verdy, on the other hand, are a bit on a slump, as they have not won in their last four matches. Although they are good at possession, that does not translate into goals. Can their attackers bounce back, and pull out some goals?

Mito Hollyhock vs Tokushima Vortis - Free Live Streaming on the J.League International YouTube Channel on December 6.

On December 6, the J.League International YouTube Channel will broadcast a free J2 match from Round 39: the clash between Mito Hollyhock and Tokushima Vortis.

Table leaders Tokushima will earn promotion to the J1 League if they win this game. Also, they could be promoted with a draw or a loss, if third place V-Varen Nagasaki obtain the same result.

In the previous match, they defeated Giravanz Kitakyushu 4-1 and achieved their third consecutive victory. They are displaying an overwhelming scoring ability with 11 goals in the last three games.

After seven years in the second division, the time seems ready for their return to the J1 League, but they will have to deal with home side Mito, who defeated Jubilo Iwata last Wednesday and are in good shape. Since both team play offensive football, we might witness an exciting game full of goals.

This hot contest kicks off at 14:00 JST on December 6 (Sunday).

Fagiano Okayama vs Avispa Fukuoka – Free Live Streaming on the J.League International YouTube Channel on December 2

On December 2, the J.League International YouTube Channel will broadcast a free J2 match from Round 38: the clash between Fagiano Okayama and Avispa Fukuoka.

Second-place Fukuoka, who are four points behind league leaders Tokushima Vortis, will face Okayama away. After failing to win for two matches, Fukuoka gained three important points on Sunday by defeating Omiya Ardija. They are now aiming for a second consecutive victory by relying in particular on their steady back line. Meanwhile, Okayama are struggling, being winless in five matches. Satoki Uejo has been in fine form, but the defensive unit needs to step up and concede less goals.

The match kicks off at 19:30 JST on December 2 (Wednesday).

The J.League International YouTube Channel will broadcast a free J2 match this weekend. On November 29, for Match-day 37, we will offer the match between Matsumoto Yamaga FC and Kyoto Sanga FC.

Matsumoto will host Kyoto. The home side displayed a solid performance and shared points with V Varen Nagasaki in the previous match. They are undefeated in the last three games. Visitors Kyoto obtained only a point at Ventforet Kofu last Wednesday and as a result, they lost the chance to get promoted this season. All eyes will be on Peter Utaka, who has scored three goals in the last four games.

V Varen Nagasaki vs Albirex Niigata - Free Live Streaming on the J.League International YouTube Channel on November 28.

On November 28, the J.League International YouTube Channel will broadcast a free J2 match from Round 37: the clash between V Varen Nagasaki and Albirex Niigata.

Third place Nagasaki, who are only three points behind second place Avispa Fukuoka, will host Niigata. On last Wednesday, they took the lead against Matsumoto Yamaga FC, but conceded an equalizer just before the end and had to do with a tie. Expectations are high for a Brazilian striker Edigar Junio, as the rest of the team showed an overall lack of scoring ability. On the other hand, Niigata suffered a total defeat against Ehime FC in the previous round, and their hopes for promotion are vanishing. Fixing their fragile defense, which conceded three goals in their last match, will be crucial.

On November 21, the J.League International YouTube Channel will broadcast a free J2 match from Round 35: the clash between Tochigi SC and Mito Hollyhock.

Tochigi SC have suffered two consecutive defeats, the last of them against Giravanz Kitakyushu in the past weekend. Since they have only scored a goal in the last five matches, their problem is obviously finding the net. While defending patiently, they might want to make good use of the few chances they might get in order to claim the three points. Meanwhile, Mito comes from defeating Kyoto Sanga 2-1 on the last match-day. Shumpei Fukahori, who scored a brace, is expected to play a crucial role this week as well.

The match kicks off at 18:00 JST on November 21 (Saturday).
