Oniki sets trophy record among J.League managers

Toru Oniki is the most successful manager in J.League history after the Kawasaki Frontale boss won the Fujifilm Super Cup 2024 for his record 10th trophy.

Frontale’s Super Cup triumph broke the tie between Oniki and the legendary Oswaldo de Oliveira, who won nine trophies, putting the Japanese boss all alone in the top spot.

Oniki ended his playing career in 2006 and moved from the Frontale first team squad to the coaching staff, beginning a path to greatness.

Frontale named Oniki the first team boss in 2017 and he promptly led them to the J1 title, the club’s first major trophy. The next year, Frontale won the league again.

In 2019, Oniki won two competitions when Frontale captured the Super Cup and J.League Cup, with the J1 and Emperor’s Cup double following the next season. The reign of doubles continued in 2021 with Oniki’s fourth J1 crown and another Super Cup.

Oniki brought so much success to Frontale that a trophy-less 2022 was astonishing, but they bounced back in 2023 by winning the Emperor’s Cup for the gaffer's record-tying ninth trophy.

Now, Oniki has an even 10, having won the Super Cup, to put him all alone at the top of the managerial mountain.
