J.League Match Preview: Sanfrecce try to reclaim top spot against Urawa

Sanfrecce Hiroshima fell from their perch atop the Meiji Yasuda J1 League last week, but they are back in action against Urawa Reds on Sunday at 15:00 JST and fighting to reclaim first place in match that will be live on JLeague.co and broadcasters around the world.

The Viola were upended by Kyoto Sanga, dropping them two points behind Vissel Kobe in the right for the title, but they are still one good day away from being back on top with three matchdays to go.

Despite being shutout against Sanga, Sanfrecce still feature the league’s best attack by a wide margin. They are a terrifying force with the ball and their frontline could easily fire the Viola to victory this weekend as they chase their first title since 2015.

Tolgay Arslan has been phenomenal since joining the Viola in the summer and Mutsuki Kato remains one of the most dependable players in J1, giving Sanfrcce a dynamic duo that they hope will fire Sanfrecce back into first place.

It’s been a difficult season for Urawa, who find themselves in 14th place. Attention has turned to next season for the Reds as they try to get back to their trophy-contending ways, and a strong finish to 2024 is the best way to position themselves for a bounce back next season.

Will the Reds take points off mighty Sanfrecce and pick up some momentum to carry into 2025? Or will the Viola get three vital points as they look to bring Japan’s most coveted trophy back to Hiroshima?
