J.League Match Preview: Sanfrecce aim to stay in the fight against Consa

Sanfrecce Hiroshima are still in the fight for the Meiji Yasuda J1 League title and they hope to extend their dreams by another week when they take on Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo on Sunday at 2 pm JST live on JLeague.co and broadcasters around the world.

The Viola enter the weekend three points back of Vissel Kobe with two matches to play, so if they can defeat Sapporo they will guarantee the title race stretches to the final week of the season. Plus, with an edge in goal difference, if they can pair a win with a Vissel loss then they will end the weekend in first place.

Sanfrecce have stumbled down the stretch with three straight losses. They scored just one goal in that stretch, a far cry from the very best showings of the league’s top scoring team. Any turnaround will have to start up front, and you’ve got to think it’s coming considering their season-long excellence and Sapporo’s frailty in defense.

Consadole have conceded the third-most goals in the league, which is a big reason they find themselves in 19th place, but they still have plenty to play for. They are not yet certain to suffer relegation, with five points between them and safety. That means they have to win this weekend to give themselves a chance of survival.

Will Sapporo keep their dreams of another season in the top flight alive? Or will Sanfrecce keep the title race going to the final week?
